What Causes Vision Problems?

Last updated 7 years ago

For a few lucky people 20/20 vision is a possibility, without the need for any sort of corrective vision treatment like LASIK surgery.  For the rest of us, though, only your local ophthalmologist or optometrist can provide a professional solution.

For people who are good candidates, there are clear advantages to getting LASIK eye surgery. However, not all vision problems can be cured by this popular treatment.  Read on to learn about some of the top causes of vision problems, such as nearsightedness and blindness.

Many vision problems simply develop as a natural sign of aging.  As they age, most people will begin to lose their ability to read without glasses or to see everything clearly.  This condition is called presbyopia.  Even someone who had 20/20 vision most of their life will usually be affected by near vision loss.  The loss of near vision, or presbyopia, occurs sometime after the age of 40.

Many people are simply born without perfect 20/20 vision due to heredity.  This type of vision problem is usually first spotted when children head off to school and have trouble seeing the chalkboard or reading tests.  Children showing signs of difficulty with reading should be scheduled for a routine eye exam with an optometrist.  LASIK is FDA approved for individuals over the age of 18.

Other Health Issues
There are a variety of other health issues that can affect vision.  Stroke has been shown to cause vision problems by damaging parts of the brain that interpret vision input.  Infections and disease can also cause anything from a mild loss of vision to full blindness.
