3 Tips for Preventative Eye Care

Last updated 6 years ago

Your eyes are your windows to the outside world and your only portal to interpreting visual stimulants. Like any other area of your body though, without proper care, your eyes will begin to fail you too soon. Macular degeneration is a condition in which the optical nerves weaken and stop processing light and interpreting images. This is an unfortunate consequence of aging, but preventative eye care can stave off macular degeneration and other optical health conditions that diminish eyesight. For tips on how to prolong your optical health, see below:

1.  Nutrition

The foods you eat can influence your optical nerves. For example, foods that are high in vitamin E and vitamin C can strengthen the connective tissues in the optical chambers. Additionally, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants can slow down macular degeneration. Foods such as blueberries, blackberries, carrots, fish, nuts, spinach, roasted plant seeds, and lean meat all contain elements that are beneficial for long-term optical health.

2.  Exercise

Your eyes need many of the same elements as the rest of your body to remain healthy and function properly. This means that your eyes require daily application exercise to remain strong, such as stretching the eyes, switching focus between objects that are near and objects that are far, and relaxing the eyes. Talk to you ophthalmologist about other eye exercises you can do to keep your eyes strong.

3.  Eye Exams

Another preventative eye care tip is to visit your eye doctor once or twice a year. This is especially important if you have vision abnormalities and require eyeglasses or contact lenses. Your ophthalmologist can catch vision problems early and help monitor your vision impairments in case they worsen over time.
