    A Guide to LASIK Aftercare

    Last updated 4 years ago

Having LASIK surgery is exciting. You’ll have new, clear vision to look forward to and freedom from contacts and eyeglasses. However, post-surgery, you will have to provide your eyes with a bit of special care while they heal. Proper surgical aftercare will help ensure that the procedure is effective in the long term and that you avoid infection and other complications. Your ophthalmologist will provide specific aftercare instructions for you, but you can learn some basic information about proper LASIK follow-up below.

    • During the First Few Days

The miracle of LASIK is that the results are almost immediate.  You will literally sit up from the procedure and SEE!  After surgery you are instructed to go home and rest your eyes for the remainder of the day.  The day after the procedure you can drive and return to most activities. Some prescription eye drops and preservative free tears are used the first week after surgery to keep the eyes lubricated and help with the healing process. Patients are advised to not touch their eyes during the first 7 days after surgery, and women are told they cannot wear eye make-up. Heavy lifting and aerobic activity are forbidden for the first 4 days after surgery. Most would agree that taking care of yourself after LASIK is easy, particularly because your vision is so good that you “want” to make sure you take care of your eyes.

    • In the Long Term

Swimming and hot tubs should be avoided for the first month after surgery. For those who are involved in intense physical activities that could result in eye trauma, such as racketball, karate and boxing are reminded to wear eye protection. Although the results of LASIK are immediate, some initial glare and halos may be experienced for the first few weeks or months after surgery, particularly at night. Customized LASIK treatments, such as Zyoptix, minimize or eliminate glare and halo issues at night. If you have any concerns about how your  eyes are healing, you should discuss them with your eye doctor at follow-up appointments.

3 Signs You Should Consider LASIK Eye Surgery

    Last updated 5 years ago

A lifetime of wearing contact lenses or glasses isn’t just a time investment—it also adds up to a significant financial investment. However, if your vision is less than 20/20, you may feel that corrective lenses are necessary for you to see the world. Luckily, there is another way for you to see clearly without the hassle of glasses or contacts: LASIK eye surgery. Continue reading to learn if you should be considering LASIK surgery.

    • You Wear Contact Lenses or Eyeglasses

Having to look after and wear your eyeglasses or spending several minutes each day caring for your contact lenses is necessary if you have poor vision. Skipping corrective eyewear is not really an option if you want to continue driving and working normally. If the time and money you spend correcting your vision is becoming a hassle, LASIK is a great solution to consider. You’ll never have to buy another bottle of contact lens cleaner, deal with a ripped contact lens or look for your glasses in the morning.Best of all, you won’t have to worry about looking after another pair of glasses until you need them for reading after your mid-40’s.

    • You’re Active and Busy

LASIK is the perfect vision correction solution for the active, busy adult. The procedure takes only a few minutes per eye, and the recovery period is short. You should immediately notice some improvement after your procedure, and your vision will continue to improve as you heal. After your eyes have healed, you can play sports, exercise, and do any other active pursuits without worrying about losing a contact lens or breaking your glasses.

    • You Are in Good Health

In order to be a good candidate for LASIK, you do need to have healthy eyes that have finished maturing. This generally means that you should wait until at least the age of 18 to undergo LASIK surgery. You should also be free of any medical conditions that may put you at risk when undergoing eye surgery, like glaucoma or herpes of the eye (Herpes Simplex or Herpes Zoster).
